The town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania is best known for the Battle of Gettysburg, a turning point in the American Civil War. The battle took place from July 1-3, 1863, and resulted in a Union victory. More than 50,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, or missing in action.
The town of Gettysburg was founded in the mid-18th century, and was named after Samuel Gettys, who owned the land on which the town was built. In the years leading up to the Civil War, Gettysburg was a quiet agricultural community with a population of just over 2,000 people.

The Battle of Gettysburg began when Confederate General Robert E. Lee led his army into Pennsylvania in an attempt to invade the North and bring an end to the Civil War. On July 1, Union and Confederate forces clashed in the town of Gettysburg, and the battle raged on for three days.

On the third day of the battle, Union General George Meade led his troops in a successful counterattack against the Confederates, forcing them to retreat. The Union victory at Gettysburg dealt a major blow to the Confederacy and marked a turning point in the Civil War.
